The Impact of COVID-19 on NCAA Gymnastics

The year 2020 was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the NCAA gymnastics season was no exception. The usual format of the NCAA Championships was disrupted, and instead, the competition was divided into four regional competitions that took place in April 2020, with the winners advancing to the national championships.

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, the NCAA gymnastics community remained resilient and determined to put on a great show for fans across the country.

The Regional Competitions

Oklahoma Regional

The Oklahoma Regional took place on April 4, 2020, and was hosted by the University of Oklahoma. The top two teams from this regional were Oklahoma and Denver, who advanced to the national championships. Oklahoma's Anastasia Webb won the all-around competition with a score of 39.700.

LSU Regional

The LSU Regional was held on April 4, 2020, and was hosted by Louisiana State University. The teams that advanced to the national championships from this regional were LSU and Utah. LSU's Kiya Johnson won the all-around competition with a score of 39.750.

Georgia Regional

The Georgia Regional took place on April 4, 2020, and was hosted by the University of Georgia. The teams that advanced to the national championships from this regional were Georgia and Michigan. Georgia's Rachel Baumann won the all-around competition with a score of 39.700.

Ann Arbor Regional

The Ann Arbor Regional was held on April 4, 2020, and was hosted by the University of Michigan. The teams that advanced to the national championships from this regional were UCLA and Alabama. UCLA's Nia Dennis won the all-around competition with a score of 39.825.

The National Championships

The NCAA gymnastics national championships were originally scheduled to take place on April 17-18, 2020, at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the championships were canceled.

Despite the disappointment of not being able to compete for a national title, the gymnasts and teams that advanced to the national championships from the regional competitions can take pride in their accomplishments and the hard work they put in throughout the season.

Looking Ahead

As we look ahead to the 2023 NCAA gymnastics season, fans can expect to see some of the same powerhouse programs competing for regional and national titles. However, with new talent emerging each year and the unpredictability of injuries and other factors, anything can happen in the world of college gymnastics.

Regardless of what the future holds, one thing is certain: the NCAA gymnastics community will continue to demonstrate its resilience, determination, and love for the sport, no matter what challenges may arise.
